Demand for time-critical service takes off

Our fleet of aircraft is expanding! BDA Logistics Innovation is investing in an additional ATR 72 freight-only aircraft, to be based at our bustling Frankfurt International Airport hub.

The new aircraft will replace one of our existing Short 360s on the Frankfurt to Birmingham route, enabling us to offer an even faster service between Germany and the UK, and with a significantly increased load capacity thanks to the fact that the ATR-72 boasts a payload of 8,000kg – more than double that of the Shorts model.

The development is in response to increasing demand for our time-critical services on this route and enables us to continue to offer a market-leading collection cut-off time from clients’ European distribution centres.

Frankfurt is at the heart of our German operations, with nightly flights operating Monday to Friday, transporting urgent freight from central Europe into the UK and Ireland to connect seamlessly with BDA’s road distribution network.

Our team of drivers and fleet of vehicles collects shipments from throughout Germany, France and Benelux, bringing consignments of time-critical freight including automotive and agricultural spare parts and healthcare supplies to the BDA hub at Frankfurt International ready for take-off at 21:40.

When the aircraft touches down in Birmingham at 23:00, goods destined for UK addresses are swiftly unloaded by our handling team and distributed through our road network, while consignments bound for Ireland are loaded onto BDA’s connecting flight into Dublin.

Freight heading from the UK into Frankfurt is then security screened and loaded – all by BDA’s own airside team – ready for departure on the return leg at 02:00. Ours is one of the first flights to land in Frankfurt just after 05:00.

BDA enjoys a unique position at Frankfurt International, as we have our own airside hub and aircraft line maintenance, as well as Regulated Agent status for cargo handling and a full dangerous goods licence. This enables us to offer our customers a late collection cut-off point for consignments.

For instance, if a client has an extremely urgent shipment to make, we can arrange either an airport to airport or even door to door service, using our own, fully trained and employed drivers, before a specified time if required.

Our European Operations Director Yvonne Boag oversees BDA’s activities throughout Germany, including those at our Frankfurt office, which is manned from 05.00 until 22.00, Monday to Friday. Recently, the team hosted an open evening to show invited guests our operations, which included seeing our handling team load the aircraft, then watching her take off en route to Birmingham.

Yvonne heads up our day-to-day activities throughout Germany and oversees activity at the Frankfurt hub. With more than 30 years’ experience in the aviation industry, Yvonne started her career as a secretary but soon became bitten by the aviation bug, taking over the management of air operator company Nightexpress, which became part of the BDA group in May 2013.

Yvonne handles everything from freight planning to aircraft maintenance, as well as ensuring BDA retains and fulfils all requirements for its Air Operator Certificate.
